Wedding Planning Tips as a Former Wedding Photographer

Last October my assistant got engaged and OMG! It has been SO exciting to help her through the planning process. Her wedding is in September and we cannot believe how close it is. I got married in 1998 and my mom planned the whole thing. For a large portion of my photography career I was a wedding photographer so trust me when I say I am a fountain of knowledge when it comes to weddings. Here are my top 4 tips on things you need to do for your big day.
  1. Decide what is most important to you! You only have a finite amount of money to spend on your wedding so decide what you want to prioritize. Do you and your fiance have a restaurant you always want and you want them to cater? Do you have a specific venue that you’ve been dreaming about for years? Once you decide what is most important to you, you can build your budget around that.
  2. Figure out your guest count early on! Your guest count is going to influence every decision you make when it comes to your wedding. High guest count=higher costs for food and drinks. When touring venues one of the first questions they are going to ask is what your guest count is.
  3. Invest in photography! I wouldn’t be doing a good job as a photographer if I didn’t tell you that finding someone who can capture the beauty of your day is incredibly important. I no longer photograph weddings but there are so many wedding photographers that do beautiful work. When you sit down with your grandchildren to show them your wedding photos you want to be proud of what they see.
  4. Don’t forget to keep dating your fiance during wedding planning! So often couples get so wrapped up in wedding planning that they forget that the wedding day is one day and your marriage is a lifetime. It is important to keep communicating with your future spouse and you don’t let wedding planning consume your every thought.
  5. Don’t be afraid to outsource! There are professionals that can help you every step of the way so that you can enjoy the process.
Remember! This is a special time in your life even if it’s not a perfect day you are creating memories that will last a lifetime!
