What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

by | Jul 1, 2022 | Blog

Packing for the hospital can seem overwhelming, online there seems to be two teams “I didn’t use anything in my hospital bag next time I’m bring a toothbrush and that’s it” or “I used EVERYTHING in my bag, I brought a pillow and my comforter” now I lay somewhere in between. Here’s what I think you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible:

  1. Ask any of my clients and this neck fan is a must during all of my sessions. I always run hot. I could do a whole blog post on my favorite fans (At this point I am an expert). I talk about how amazing my neck fan is so much that my make up artist now has one. If you don’t want something around your neck during labor I would also suggest a portable fan that straps onto your stroller. You can strap it onto your hospital bed during labor and afterwards you can use it when you take your baby for walks.
  2.  A client told me she wore ballet songs during labor because they are more          breathable than normal socks and they have the grips on the bottom. I thought this was genius! Here are the pairs she wore her entire hospital stay. If you couldn’t tell I’m always hot. If you run cold, I would suggest getting thicker socks that still have the grippy bottoms. The main takeaway of number two is to always have grippy bottom socks at the hospital! We don’t want you sliding around while you’re in labor.
  3. Shower sandals are a must have for your hospital bag! Your feet aren’t the only feet that have ever been in that hospital shower so pack a pair of shower sandals just to be on the safe side.
  4.  Lastly, always pack snacks! Depending on when you give birth the cafeteria may be closed so you’re going to want your favorite snacks just in case! Make sure to pack extra for your partner, you don’t know how many times I’ve heard stories of birthing partners passing out because they haven’t eaten in 48 hours.

So often I see moms getting shamed online for bringing too much to the hospital or not bringing enough don’t listen to it! For some reason I had it in my head that staying at the hospital was going to be like staying at a fancy hotel. It’s not! You’re in labor, people are constantly checking on you, it is not a relaxing environment. For that reason, if being “extra” by packing more things makes you feel more comfortable go for it! This is your labor experience. You can do whatever makes you feel more relaxed.
